Overview of a Week of Photography (Week 6)

Week 6 of my photography 365 project started with a morning ice storm after a night of bitter cold. When I did venture out the temperatures and just barely climbed over freezing - and yet the ice was melting. The sound of the ice melting from the trees sounded like rain fall. I stopped by a field of thistles to get this picture.

I think I'll end up with a whole series of these abstracts based on the stains of snow salt on stone. I see a different world every time I look at them.

The weekend included a trip to Richmond, Virginia - and an afternoon in Carytown yielded this glimpse at a secret garden.

And, if visiting Richmond, I must make time to visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. I'm still working on capturing the perfect picture of Chihuly’s Red Reeds at the museum.

Back to indoor studies. Keeping flowers in the house help to remind me that spring will surely return.

A rare abandoned building in the neighborhood. It is a bit of a mystery that in this urban, densely developed neighborhood, a building sits empty and abandoned.

Wrapping up the week with another salt stain abstract. This particular abstract was modified by creating a mirror image of the image. I do this by splitting the image in half in Photoshop and putting two of the same halves together to create a new image. It's a fun technique to play with.

Overview of a Week of Photography (Week 5)

In the fifth week of 2014 cold weather prevailed with one brief day of blue sky sunshine. A week of work and a weekend spent in the vicinity of Charlottesville - visiting the beautiful (and empty) Swannanoa estate and the downtown Charlottesville mall. As always a chance to get away from the daily routine is refreshing and a road trip is just the thing to shape up a week of routine and sameness.

Patterns of ice seem to emanate light and hint at other worlds.

Feathers in a dream catcher catch the last light of a setting sun.

This is a favorite window for the late afternoon light, diffused through painted glass. A fringed shawl and a sea shell collected during warmer weather complete the tableau.

Swannanoa Palace

A red barn sits high on a hillside farm, a punctuation mark against the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Every day calls for a little magic, a collection of colorful antique tins and two cheerful ceramic birds.

Patterns of light and dark, depths hinted at and secrets held. Winter at once exposed and hidden.

And so the week is bracketed by the cold blue brilliance of ice and by the patterns revealed by the salt stains left behind when the ice is gone.

On Valentine's Day

Photograph by Terry Rowe, Sweet Dog by Keenthings, http://keenthings.com/home.html

Yes, it's Valentine's day.

Red roses are nice but I love tulips. I do love the graphically beautiful, the quirky, the sweet vintage Valentine cards of long ago. And chocolate, you can almost never go wrong giving me chocolates. I'm a sucker for boxes of chocolates with a variety of fillings - Butlers, Irish chocolates or Fannie May creams, even Lindor's truffles. My favorite perfume. A good dinner at a favorite restaurant, always appreciated.

All that said, I'm not a fan of Valentine's day.

As a child (before the politically correct days of every child gets a card) Valentine's day was a competition of who got the most cards - and woe the child who got none - the pain of a child who feels unloved and is teased for a lack of cards is hard to heal. As a young woman cast down when no cards or flowers came, and elated when they did, Valentine's day was still dreaded. As I have gotten older, Valentine's day has become an obligatory cards, candy, restaurant reservation chore.

I prefer to let the people I love know it on a regular basis, surprise them with gifts, or candy, or flowers just because. In fact, the best gifts for me are the surprise gifts, the just because I thought of you today gifts. Flowers because it's Monday, chocolates because it's raining, dinner out because I know you like it.

So if Valentine's day is special and important to you - I'm glad. I just won't be wishing you a happy Valentine's day, I'll surprise you some day with an unexpected gift.

Four Short Stories

Story: (1) an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment; and (2) an account of past events in someone's life or in the evolution of something.

Sometimes I am moved by a phrase or a thought - I translate those into visual short stories. I love this format because, between the words and the images, enough of the the story is told...the rest is up your imagination.

Overview of a Week of Photography (Week 4)

The fourth week of 2014, and of my 365 photograph a day project, was a week of cold, snow, and ice. All the usual elements of winter but it did seem like we got a bit more of each then we really wanted.

My dog, Bear, loves the world transformed with snow and he ran through the backyard as if it were his own personal ski run.

Bear airborne.

Keeping fresh, unfrozen, water for the birds is a challenge on cold winter days.

A tree on the bank of the Potomac River. A thin glaze of ice on the river reflects the rising dawn and the bit of a waxing moon is still visible.

Indoor activities, like reading, are always enjoyed on a cold day.

Visiting the Potomac river, Georgetown and the spires of Georgetown University are visible down river from Roosevelt Island.

Venturing out downtown, a tour bus with a graphic of Washington, DC monuments is parked in such a way that it's windows show the reflection of the US Capitol.

Wrapping up the week, a single tulip on the kitchen window sill. Store bought flowers, reminders that spring and warmth exist somewhere.

Thank you for visiting!
